We went this morning to the grocery store, which was nice. We only needed a few things, which made it less overwhelming. Mostly we needed eggs, (one of the relatively few but gradually expanding number of foods that Eli will actually eat) which look like this when you buy then in the Congo:
Yumm... nice and clean.
We also hung out with the neighbors. And went swimming. And Skyped home. Just like every other day here.
But the highlight of my day was this: Eli called me "Mama." Twice!
Now you might be wondering what he called me before.
It was something like "crazy white lady."
Ok, just kidding. He didn't call me anything. There is just a lot of grunting (or whining) and pointing. No recognizable words. Granted, my Tshiluba really stinks. So what real words he does say are missed, unfortunately. But I'm working on it. I have started a list of important words we're working on. This is sort of a job, because you have to translate them from English to French in one program, copy and paste the word onto a web page and then translate it to Tshiluba, and then try and figure out which word best fits what you are trying to say based on the definitions or alternative translations, which are explained in French. Turns our French is another language I do not speak. So basically it's really fun.
But these are the words we have so far:
Please:
kwǒkò (He does actually say something resembling Co-Co when he wants something... if you force him.)
Outside: kunsa
Shoe: cisàbaatà
Water: mâyi
Milk: mabèèle
Giraffe:
ntengu (the neighbor girls have toy giraffes. No, we have not seen giraffes at our hotel.)
Banana: cibòte
