In Which There are Birthdays and Visitors

This weekend my parents came out from The Homeland to pay us a quick visit on the holiday weekend.
They had the intense privilege of being here for Eli's inaugural birthday party!  He was so very excited, and had been talking about his birthday for weeks.  (He got to experience the wonder of birthdays a few months ago at Isaac's party.)

Here are some scenes from the weekend.

This guy turned 3!

And he's the cutest 3 year old around!

Snugglin' with Grandpa in the morning.
"Watcha-'oovie, mom!"

Helpin build a fence to keep the bunnies out of the garden

Grandma pushed us on the swings!

All the Menfolk went fishing.

Success!

Raya refused to participate in the picture-taking funtivities.

She attached herself here instead.

Getting ready to party!

He had the biggest grin when we sang to him!

And he sang to himself throughout the day as well.

Ready to open!

I wanted to get these, but John said No.

So got a cowboy hat instead.
and boots!
and... a horse?

We got Isaac a hat too.
Since Isaac had graciously shared his birthday, we figured Eli could share just a little too.

We had a fun weekend with Grandma and Gramdpa!
Come back soon, guys!

1 Year

It's been one year since this moment:

One Year.

Little did I know I'd spend the next 5 weeks in Kinshasa waiting on their visas,
Meeting new friends.
Starting something New and Exciting.
Hard weeks, missing my Isaac.

Can't believe it's been a whole year.
Can't believe it's only been a year.

So lucky they call me Mom.
Love you, babies.

Friday Adventures

It was going to be a productive Friday. And... I guess it was. Ish.

It started off ok. I had explained to the children (approximately 1 zillion times) that it would be boring and I'm sorry, but I need you to sit patiently please and I'll go as fast as I can. Even bribed them with suckers afterward if they were good. There were books to read in a basket there, and I'd brought them some cars. That entertained them for a little while while we waited, but once I went up to the counter to actually do my thing, all bets were off. We had this lady who, although kind, didn't know how to apply for SSNs for internationally adopted children, and had to call some other lady to come and help her. Not to mention she apparently had some kind of condition where she had to speak in a near-whisper so I had to practically stick my head inside her window to hear her, and it was a handicap accessible window so the counter where I had my papers all laid out was about as high as my kneecaps. I'd filled out the appropriate forms, but apparently it's easier just to whisper the questions all over again. Meanwhile my kids were getting tired of "sitting patiently." So now Raya decided to pick up all the Social Security fliers they'd placed on the chairs, and bring them to me one by one, crumpled up just a bit for interest's sake. They're so boring otherwise, you know.  Isaac made a few into paper airplanes, and Eli was trying to recruit some other guy sitting there to help him with his. I told them not to throw them. I tried to convince them that they could hold them in their hands, and sit there and pretend to fly them without throwing them. Well, you can guess how long that lasted. Then I had to confiscate the airplanes. Eli then had to pee. Of course. He's dancing and clutching his man parts frantically and begging to go potty. (It's always an emergency with that one!) So Isaac takes him to the bathroom, which was within sight, just across the room. He pees, but can't reach the sink so doesn't wash his hands, and then they come back out. He sits for a few more minutes, and plays with something or other, tries to engage the other SS-office goers in some sort of mischief, tries to go help out the security guard (who shooed him away at the beginning, but by now was just handing him back the stray airplanes-- never cracking a smile) and then decides he needs to pee again. Before I can stop them (she was probably asking me another question. Or maybe Raya was wandering into the next room. Or maybe this is where I was texting John "will someone please shoot me?" Just kidding. That was afterwards. No phones allowed, you know. Also, no firearms.) they march back to the bathroom, which is where I retrieved them when I was mercifully finished. (Yes, I just traipsed right into the men's room. I'm bold like that I guess.) Where I find Eli up to his elbows in urinal water (barf!) and Isaac just watching him, unconcerned. Since I'm loaded down like a pack mule at this point with 1 squirming Raya, 1 diaper bag, 1 purse, and 2 folders of important and irreplaceable documents, I glare at him, muttering under my breath, grab his arm and drag him out, nasty dripping hands and all, and march him out to the car where I bathe him in hand sanitizer and try not to think about how in approximately 2 minutes he'll be sucking on his fingers again.

And just like that. We'll have SSNs in 7-10 days.
Piece of cake.

So then it's on to the doctor's office, where Raya had her first plastic surgery. (Ok, not really. She had little nubs on the sides of her pinkies... like little tiny spare fingers.  We were getting them taken off lest she be relentlessly teased come junior high school.) Which she loved of course. So while I was holding down for what was apparently ruthless torture (I'm not sure which was worse- the actual procedure, or the fact that we were holding her down), I had the boys set up to play by my desk in the big shared office room. However, instead of playing nicely like civilized humans, the boys were entertaining themselves by scribbling on chairs and clipboards (and sometimes paper), stealing candy bars, running up and down the halls, checking out every exam room (including the one where one of the residents was pumping), and generally being crazy and out of control. (Thankfully, it was almost lunch and most of the patients were gone at that point.)

Eventually, we made it home. I sent them outside and made them run laps. That worked out so well that almost instantly I needed to institute a new rule: You must keep your penis IN your pants. Otherwise they pee on EVERYTHING. Sheesh. Boys.

That was my Friday. I guess I did get some important things done, tho it cost me a few more gray hairs. Hope yours was better!

BabyGirl.

Yall.  She's the princess
And she knows it.
I can't wait til she's 15, cuz we're all in trouble, lemme tell ya.

She does love the swing.
To the extend that there is much shrieking and fit-throwing if you dare to extract her from her rocking throne.

So proud that she went up that tube all by herself!

Watch for her on the Olympics 2028.

Especially if they add Competitive Eating as an Olympic sport.
She's so there.

Boys.

These boys.
They make my heart happy...
and my hair gray.

But they are always together.
And what a gift, this brother business.
Also, I should mention, they are also often upside down.

Swinging on one of the first nice days.

This is what Joy looks like.

Again.  Upside-down.

There are chicks at the Farm Store.  Who knew?!

Trying on our clothes for Master Chief's wedding.
(Yeah, this was actually before the wedding. Why would we have to try them on after!?)

I dare you to resist me.

He's actually saying "Cheese."
No, Really.

Napping?  That's lame.  He's Upside-down.  Again.

Handsome.

"Mom, Look at Us!"
They are just too cool for words.

So Thankful.

Oh, and another Isaac story:  This morning we were in the car, and Isaac was noticing that it was overcast.  He said that the sun wasn't up.
Oh yes, I said, it's up.  It's not dark out, right?  It's just hiding behind the clouds.
No, not dark, he decided.  I think the sun is getting dressed.
Getting dressed?  Well, I suppose behind clouds is a good place to get dressed.
Yeah.  Cuz no one wants to see his naked bottom!

Mother's Day.

So thankful for these babes, who give me the honor and privilege of calling myself Mom.
(Well, actually, they call me Mom.
When I refer to myself, it's something more like "Royal Highness." )

But I also want to remember their First Mamas today.
The special ladies who gave them life, and through one circumstance or another, had to let them go.
On this day we remember you too.
I'm forever humbled and grateful.

I'm also thankful for this lady.
I'm a bit bummed that I didn't appreciate her til much later than I should have, but nevertheless, I do appreciate her.  And mom, please let's just forget that the years of 1994-1999 ever happened, yes?
 Ok, deal.
Love you, Mom!
(and seriously.  How cute is that little boy?!)

And my MIL, (who is apparently very adept at hiding from my camera)
without whom I would not have the husband I have today.
Happy Mother's Day, Ladies!

Man. It's been a while.

Here's a story.

Once upon a time, Raya likes to turn on the music on my phone.  There is one song on there that ends in this awful screeching guitar improv drama.  One day, Isaac was unfortunate enough to happen upon us when this part of the song was playing.  "What's that noise?"  he asks.
"It's this terrible song Raya chose,"  I reply.  "It's hurting my ears!"
"Yeah."  he adds.  "And it's giving me bad breath!"

Now, THAT's a bad song!

Other than that...  what have we been up to?  Well, we went to my brother's wedding 2 weekends ago.  It was fun, and we are excited to have Aunt Crocodile officially in the family.
Here is some cuteness, with all awesome photo credit to Emily Photography!

I thought this picture was all sweet and romantical, until I read this description on FB from Uncle Master Chief:
I believe that we are laughing at me saying something to the effect of me wanting to cut my arms of and beat myself to death with them... She said that wasn't possible.

Which made it all the more sweet and romantical.

 Best Family Ever.
Too bad the kids had better things to look at.  lol.
